John Moule donates tools to Carpentry and Joinery department on behalf of his late father

Southport-born John Moule has kindly donated a vast collection of high-quality, unused tools to Southport College’s Carpentry and Joinery department on behalf of his late father, Ted Moule.

Ted, who sadly passed away in 2020, was a Carpentry and Joinery teacher and then a Senior Lecturer in Health and Safety at Southport College for many years, until his retirement in 1991. His son John recently came across a pristine collection of tools in the family loft, which he has generously decided to donate to our current Carpentry and Joinery department.

The collection includes high quality industry standard equipment such as a jackplane, smoothing planes, scrapers, lingnum vitae carving mallett, various types of saws, plus much more and will make a valuable addition to the wide range of industry standard tools that the students already use in their daily learning.

Not only is this an incredibly generous act of kindness, but it is also a fantastic piece of history for Southport College. Ted Moule taught the College’s current Carpentry and Joinery teacher, James Ryan, who is over the moon—not just because these tools will benefit his students, but because they represent a tangible link to the College’s rich history and his own journey as a student.

James Ryan says, “We are so grateful that John has donated the tools to the department. We use hand tools to teach traditional Carpentry and Joinery methods along with industry relevant new techniques and equipment, and the tools will add to our already substantial tool collection.

Southport College has strong links in the area and is known as a centre of excellence in construction subjects. The re-addition of Carpentry and Joinery in recent years has reinforced the department, all trades are now catered for with student numbers growing year on year.

This donation comes at a particularly meaningful time, as we celebrate the importance of hands-on learning through apprenticeships. National Apprenticeship Week highlights the vital role of skilled trades in our region, and donations like this help ensure that students have access to the best tools and resources, and highlight the vital role of skilled trades in our region.

Southport College would like to express a huge thank you to John for donating such a valuable tool collection, which will undoubtedly make a valuable impact on the training of our Carpentry and Joinery students and Apprentices. We know our students will enjoy using them for many years to come and will really benefit from having such fabulous additional resources at their fingertips as they develop their craft.
