The Eco Hub is a cutting-edge facility designed to inspire and train the next generation of plumbers, engineers, and electricians in sustainable careers. Funded by the Department of Education’s Local Skills Improvement Fund, the facility is equipped with industry-standard technology, including state-of-the-art heat pumps, solar panel installation training, and hands-on experience in designing and engineering sustainable energy solutions.

The spacious workshop areas and dedicated demonstration zones provide an immersive learning environment for students to develop essential skills in both traditional and emerging green technologies.

By integrating sustainable energy practices into our curriculum, we are ensuring that our students are well-prepared for the future as the Liverpool City Region and the wider UK transition towards a greener economy.

The event was attended by leading figures from across Southport and the LCR region, including Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Lead of Regeneration, Economy and Skills; Ian Raikes, CEO at Southport Learning Trust and Rachel Fitzgerald, CEO of Southport BID. Guests also included some of the Eco Hub’s suppliers Quantum Group, who installed cutting edge heat pumps, and AMP-EV who installed the solar panel technology.

Deputy CEO of Southport College, Mark Burrows, says “We are proud to open our new Eco Hub facilities as a shining example of our commitment to sustainability and innovation. As the Liverpool City Region aspires to achieve net zero by 2040, we are actively preparing learners for a greener future through teaching sustainability, and establishing strong partnerships with employers and international collaborators.”

The Eco Hub’s opening is a major step in Southport College’s commitment to sustainability and skills development. Through industry partnerships and hands-on training, the college is equipping students with the expertise needed to thrive in the growing green energy sector.
